    Some polyhedra can be nicely approximated by a construction using another polyhedron.

The constructions below using cubes were developed by Hauy as part of his investigations in crystallography.

As well as images there are also animations showing how the approximation improves as the polyhedra are built with more pieces.

The Python code for these models is in poly_constr.zip. The only argument the programs take is the stage of construction e.g. c2o.py 4 will give stage four of building an octahedron from cubes. The output is in OFF format and can be processed using the Antiprism programs.

Cube from Tetrahedra  Med    Lrg  
Description : Cube from tetrahedra. This is a fractal construction. The midpoints of each edge of a tetrahedon become the triangular bases for the tetrahedra of the next stage.

Cube from Octahedra  Med    Lrg  
Description : Cube from octahedra. This is a fractal construction the same as the cube from tetrahedra, but with the tetrahedra truncated to give octahedra.
